History

The Chamber of Traditions at the Local Group of the Polish Cultural and Educational Association was established in 1987 on the initiative of Edward Bromek, one of the group´s founders, and Stanislaw Zahradnik, chairman of the Regional History Section at the PZKO Main Board. The first exhibits were acquired during a collecting campaign organized among the residents of Nebory and the surrounding area. It was a sizable collection of household appliances, furniture, old schoolbooks, calendars, books and folk costumes. Today the Chamber houses about 470 exhibits of ethnographic nature.

Characteristics of the exhibition and collections

The Chamber of Traditions is located on the second floor of the Paweł Oszelda PZKO House in Nebory.  It houses, among other things, furniture, household items, agricultural tools and folk costumes. In one corner stands a whitewashed kitchen-bread stove, the floor is made of boards, and an antique lamp hangs from the ceiling. Most of the objects are presented on shelves along the longer wall and directly on the floor. These include clay pots and cake molds, a hand-washing machine, braids, strainers, basins, bowls, grain measures, washboards, flails, dough rollers or querns. Unfortunately, the Chamber does not have the capacity to exhibit Těšín costumes, which make up about half of the collection. A treasure of the Nebory Chamber is a box used to store toiletries, made by Paweł Oszelda for his father in one of the toughest prisons in Europe at the time - Špilberk near Brno.
